KPN Deploys Tekelec Sigtran Signaling Platform to Improve Network Utilization

Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), a leading developer of high-performance network applications for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks, today announced that tier one operator KPN has deployed the Tekelec EAGLE 5 Integrated Signaling System (ISS) to expand its signaling network capacity and enable the transition to an all-Internet protocol (IP) architecture. KPN provides telephone, Internet and television services to enterprise and residential customers through its fixed network in The Netherlands as well as mobile services across The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Western Europe. Replacing its existing out-dated signal transfer points (STPs), KPN selected the EAGLE 5 ISS to provide additional network signaling capacity and integrated applications that will provide a cost-effective transition to the future IMS network architecture. The Tekelec EAGLE 5 ISS supports Sigtran (SS7 over IP) signaling, which is a stepping stone for cost-effectively migrating to IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) at the signaling layer. Sigtran provides increased capacity over IP—resulting in reduced link quantity requirements, more efficient bandwidth utilization, enhanced services and reduced transport cost. Together, these benefits allow operators to offer their customers new, more advanced services at competitive prices. "We selected Tekelec to upgrade our signaling network because of the company’s global leadership in IP signaling and integrated applications,” said Michael Vocke, manager, Mobile Network, KPN. "With the EAGLE 5 ISS, Tekelec delivers a highly reliable and cost-effective solution for the transition to an all-IP mobile core network which will enable us to provide our customers with the next-generation services they require.” Wolrad Claudy, managing director for Tekelec’s operations in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East, added, "We are delivering a roadmap for operators to advance to tomorrow’s next-generation networks while continuing to support today’s network requirements. We welcome this opportunity to continue expanding our footprint in Europe and look forward to helping KPN retain its competitive position by delivering advanced services to its customers.” About KPN KPN is the leading multimedia company in the Netherlands, providing consumers and consumer households with fixed and mobile telephony, internet and TV services.
