John Harwood Joins The New York Times as Political Writer

The New York Times announced today that John Harwood, chief Washington correspondent for CNBC television, will become a political writer for The New York Times effective Dec. 24. Mr. Harwood will contribute political stories and analysis to various sections of the newspaper and NYTimes.com. The part-time role is similar to work he has done for The Wall Street Journal for the past two years while leading CNBC's Washington coverage. Mr. Harwood joined The Wall Street Journal in 1991 as White House correspondent, and later became Congressional correspondent and political editor. In 2006 he joined CNBC as chief Washington correspondent. He offers political analysis on NBC’s Meet the Press and PBS’s Washington Week in Review, among other programs. Previously, he worked for the St. Petersburg Times as state capital correspondent, Washington correspondent and political editor. Mr. Harwood, 51, was born in Louisville, Ky. and grew up in the Maryland suburbs outside of the nation’s capital. He graduated magna cum laude from Duke University in 1978. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University for the 1989-90 academic year.
