Janus Announces March Assets under Management; First-Quarter Earnings

Janus Announces March Assets under Management; First-Quarter Earnings Presentation Scheduled for Wednesday, April 20

    Business Editors

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2005--For the month ended March 31, 2005, Janus Capital Group Inc. (NYSE:JNS) reported total assets under management of approximately $132.2 billion, which is down from the prior month's assets of $134.4 billion. This decrease of 1.6% reflects March's challenging market environment, which saw the S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite indexes lose 1.8% and 2.6%, respectively, during the month. Firmwide average assets under management during March were approximately $133.3 billion compared with February's average assets of $134.4 billion, a decrease of 0.8%. Excluding money markets, average assets in March were $124.5 billion.
Total long-term (non-money market) net outflows were $0.6 billion for the month, which is unchanged from February. The second and final phase of the previously disclosed ING redemption, which was expected to happen in March, will now occur in April and is estimated to be approximately $2.2 billion.
Janus' relative mutual fund performance remained strong in March. As of March 31, approximately 68% of the funds in the company's primary fund family, Janus Investment Fund (JIF), were in the top half of their Lipper categories on a three-year, total-return basis. In addition, more than 65% of the JIF funds were in the top half of their Lipper categories on a one-year period, based on total-returns. The relative performance of Janus' growth and core equity funds continued to be strong, with 83% and 73% of those funds ranking in Lipper's top quartile on a one- and three-year total return basis, respectively. (See Exhibit 2).
