Honka building an exclusive holiday resort in Japan

Honka Japan is constructing an exclusive holiday resort in Karuizawa, Japan. It consists of a Spa building and 15 log villas, each accommodating up to six people. People can stay for extended periods based on their membership. The resort will open in summer 2019.

Prince Hotels Inc is a Japanese hospitality chain with 42 hotels in Japan and seven overseas. Honka has previously supplied the Prince Hotels with 20 villas and a main building at another location in Karuizawa.

Karuizawa is an upmarket mountain resort town only one hour from Tokyo by train, famous for its skiing and outdoor activities, waterfalls and hot springs.

The concept behind Karuizawa Asama Prince Hotel is completely new: customers who buy a membership to the hotel will get all-inclusive access to all services. These include the spa and several outdoor activities such as golf and downhill skiing. The hotel will also have boutiques, a beauty salon, hot baths and a restaurant.

The hotel is targeted at high-end customers who enjoy high quality and healthy living. The buildings are made from solid wood to ensure guests have a healthy and relaxing stay. Scientists have discovered that people who stay in wooden buildings have a lower blood pressure and resting heart rate. Solid wood also has excellent acoustic properties, absorbing sounds and creating a calming and cosy atmosphere.

The Karuizawa Asama Prince Hotel represents contemporary and distinctive architecture. The use of non-settling Honka Fusion log in the buildings gives a more minimalistic look without the settling spaces and wide architraves of traditional log construction.

The logs for the resort, which consists of a main building and 15 log villas, have been delivered all the way from Finnish pine forests and have been carefully selected and crafted specially for this project.
