Honda Recalls 1.4 Mln Vehicles

(RTTNews) - Honda has issued a voluntary recall of additional 1.4 million vehicles to fix faulty Takata airbags.

In the recalled vehicles, the front passenger air bag has a defect that could cause the inflators to explode, sending shrapnel at high speed toward driver and passengers.

The latest recall brings the total number of vehicles recalled due to faulty Takata airbag inflators to nearly 40 million in the U.S. alone.

The recall covers Honda and Acura vehicles and the company says it is part of an attempt to get ahead of a government mandated schedule of recalls on the faulty air bags.

The recall includes 2010-2012 Acura RL, 2011-2014 Acura TSX, 2011-2013 Acura ZDX, 2010-2012 Honda Accord, 2011 Honda Civic, 2010-2015 Honda Crosstour, 2010-2011 Honda CR-V, 2010-2011 Honda Element, 2014 Honda FCX Clarity, 2011-2014 Honda Fit and Fit EV, 2010-2015 Honda Pilot, 2010-2014 Honda Insight and 2010-2013 Honda Ridgeline.

The Honda recalls are the fourth part of a five-phase plan announced by the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration in May of 2016.

Honda has asked its customers schedule the free repair at authorized dealerships as soon as possible.
