Green Mountain Coffee Dives into River Cleanup

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR) has once again joined a nationwide effort to keep America's waterways clean. As a sponsor of the National River Cleanup 2008, the Company will give employees paid time off to clean a section of Vermont’s Winooski River from July 28 through August 1, 2008. Company volunteers will pick up litter in and around the Winooski, from above the Middlesex Dam to Waterbury. They will use canoes donated by Umiak Outdoor Outfitters in Stowe to reach trash that is submerged and to transport trash out of the river. "River cleanup is one of our most popular employee volunteer opportunities,” says Paul Comey, Vice President of Environmental Affairs for Green Mountain Coffee. "Clean water is essential for both a healthy community and a great cup of coffee, so we’re happy to do our part.” National River Cleanup, sponsored by American Rivers, the nation’s leading river conservation organization, is a series of community-based stream cleanups happening nationwide. This annual event raises public awareness of the magnitude of trash accumulating in our nation’s waterways. Since the inception of National River Cleanup Week in 1991, more than 600,000 volunteers have participated in thousands of cleanups across the country, covering more than 100,000 miles of waterways. This is the fourth year that Green Mountain Coffee has participated in the national effort. Last year, volunteer employees pulled 520 tires, seven cubic yards of trash, and ten cubic yards of metal out of the Winooski River. The initiative is part of the Company’s CAFÉSM Program (Community Action for Employees), which provides paid time off for employees to volunteer in their local communities. "It’s thrilling to see so many people across the nation pitching in to protect their local river or favorite stream,” says Rebecca Wodder, president of American Rivers, the organization that sponsors National River Cleanup. "We applaud the work of Green Mountain Coffee for taking action to keep the Winooski River healthy.” About American Rivers Founded in 1973, American Rivers is a national non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy natural rivers for the benefit of communities, fish and wildlife.
