Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMST), announced today that it has promoted Ian Birch to the newly-created position of executive vice president and chief content officer. In addition, Mr. Birch will retain his role as editor-in-chief, TV Guide magazine. He will continue to report to Gemstar-TV Guide chief executive officer Rich Battista and remain based in New York. In this new role, Mr. Birch will work closely with the editorial and programming teams at each of the company’s businesses to identify, develop and expand upon cross-platform content initiatives. I look forward to working with all of my colleagues at the magazine, channel and online to identify content opportunities where the quality of our combined resources and platforms will prove even more attractive to the networks, advertisers, and of course, consumers.” Mr. Birch joined TV Guide in October, 2004. He is the senior editorial executive at TV Guide magazine and oversaw all editorial aspects of the historic re-launch of the publication from a digest-sized magazine to a full-size, full-color entertainment magazine in October, 2005. Mr. Birch joined TV Guide with more than 25 years of experience as an editor, writer and publishing executive, having launched new titles, and revitalized many existing magazine brands in the United States and the United Kingdom. Prior to EMAP, Mr. Birch spent three years as editor of Wenner Media’s Us magazine. In 1993 Media Week and Ad Week nominated him as one of the top 20 American editors of the year.
