GameSpot and The NPD Group Team to Provide Complete View Of Video Game Buying Cycle GameSpot Trax's Game Buyer Preference Data and NPD's Point-of-Sale Information Now Combined To Offer The Most Comprehensive Content for Video Game Marketers
GameSpot (www.gamespot.com), a leading source for unbiased gaming information and a property of CNET Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNET), and The NPD Group, a leading provider of sales and marketing information, today announced a strategic partnership to offer each other's statistics in GameSpot Trax and the NPD Group's sales information from its cross-entertainment group, NPD Funworld.
These game industry consumer tracking tools will combine NPD Funworld's sales transaction data on video games and PC games with the pre-release buzz and editorial coverage data from GameSpot Trax. The resulting new analytical tools from the companies will provide game publishers, retailers, investors, and others that closely track the industry, a complete picture of a game's buying cycle, from user awareness, purchase intent, competitive mindshare, and other valuable metrics already provided by GameSpot Trax, to actual sales activity, as provided by NPD Funworld.
Expected to launch in the second quarter of 2005 with newly integrated sales data from NPD, GameSpot Trax will give the gaming industry an even deeper understanding of how consumers are responding to specific video games, as well as their competitor's products.
"The Internet enables marketers to observe users' preferences and buying intention trends like never before," said Vince Broady, cofounder of GameSpot and senior vice president of games and entertainment, CNET Networks. "Our partnership with The NPD Group now allows us to combine GameSpot Trax's deep online user insights with offline buyer activity to create a comprehensive, 360-degree perspective. This new level of market visibility guide publishers toward spending as efficiently and effectively as possible."
Also as part of this new alliance, The NPD Group will integrate into its PowerView application average game reviews from Game Rankings.com, a GameSpot affiliate site that offers users overall video game rankings based on magazine and Web site reviews. PowerView, which provides its users with customized information views and analyses, gives the user unlimited access to the full range of information in the NPD databases ranging from sales trends to SKU-level detail. The addition of GameRanking's game review scores will allow the PowerView user to gain an even better understanding of how editorial reviews actually impact sales.
Launched in the first quarter of 2003, GameSpot Trax is the industry's most advanced tool for tracking and analyzing essential game data that ranges from consumer awareness, interest, and purchase intent to competitive mindshare, campaign effectiveness, audience profiles, and editorial coverage. GameSpot Trax provides a window to the present and future of gaming through the real-time tracking of the activities of more than 1 million daily GameSpot network visitors, more than 6 million registered users, and editorial coverage delivered by 350 online and offline media outlets. A recent addition to the product offers unprecedented insight into the demographic, geographic, and psychographic profiles of the fans behind every game, adding further depth and granularity for the games marketers, retailers, and industry observers that rely on GameSpot Trax to make key business decisions.
GameSpot Trax and NPD customers use the companies' combined information to inform a wide array of business decisions, including product development and distribution plans, marketing and public relations strategies, and inventory control and optimization.
