Freescale Offers World's First ZigBee-Compliant Platform; Home Automa
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers/Automotive Writers
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2005--Manufacturers are now able to leverage ZigBee technology in sensing and monitoring applications thanks to the world's first single-source ZigBee (TM)-compliant platform from Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B). TUV Rheinland of North America, a designated independent testing and assessment service of the ZigBee Alliance, confirmed Freescale's platform conforms to the IEEE(R)802.15.4 standard and the ZigBee specification.
"We congratulate Freescale on its efforts to have the first ZigBee-compliant platform," said David Surber, vice president of engineering at TUV Rheinland. "Our global network of laboratories is already set up and ready to support this emerging technology with our testing and certification program."
Freescale's comprehensive, scalable solution is engineered to reduce the time and money customers spend developing products using multiple suppliers. ZigBee technology from Freescale enables wireless products for a variety of monitoring, sensing, automation, and control applications in the home, light commercial and industrial environments. ZigBee is an attractive solution for wireless applications requiring long battery life, cost effective connectivity and easy deployment.
"We expect the emerging global ZigBee standard to be a major enabler for networked monitoring and control applications like industrial controllers, sensor nets and home controllers," said Bob Heile, chairman of the ZigBee Alliance. "Freescale has taken a leadership role in the Alliance and in this certification process, which will continue to grow industry support for the adoption of wireless connectivity."
"Our customers need to integrate ZigBee technology quickly and easily into their applications," said Franz Fink, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale's wireless group. "The compliance of our platform to the ZigBee specification shows our continued leadership and commitment to enable OEMs to quickly meet market demands."
Providing a complete solution
Customers can take advantage of the ZigBee-compliant platform from Freescale with the MC13193 Evaluation Kit (13193EVK-A00), a best-in-class addition of development tools to Freescale's ZigBee platform. The 13193EVK-A00 builds on the success of the award-winning MC13192 Developer's Starter Kit (13192DSK-A00). It offers a platform that supports full ZigBee networking capabilities and range in excess of 350 meters according to L.S. Research. The kit contains the necessary hardware and software to demonstrate and develop robust, affordable and easy-to-deploy ZigBee-compliant solutions.
Going beyond RF ICs, medium access control (MAC) and ZigBee software, Freescale offers MCUs, sensors and the award-winning CodeWarrior(TM) Development Studio to support developers. Freescale is providing reference designs with layout files and antenna examples as well as module solutions from Freescale's third party partners. All of which simplify procurement, help speed time-to-market and reduce the need for RF layout expertise.
