FRC Praises Leader McConnell, Senator Wicker for Moving to Protect Taxpayers from Funding Elective Abortion

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed a motion today to proceed to the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" (S. 109). sponsored by Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS), Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS), and Senator James Lankford (R-OK).

While Congress debates border security spending, it has already passed the spending bill for the Department of Health and Human Services that contains the long-standing Hyde Amendment funding restriction. S. 109 would make that permanent and apply it to the tax subsidies under Obamacare which has been increasingly subsidizing elective abortion coverage.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins responded with the following comments:

"We applaud Leader McConnell and Senator Wicker for moving forward with 'The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act' to restore government neutrality on the issue of taxpayer funding for abortion.

"Common ground is often difficult to achieve in Washington.  However, the issue of taxpayer funding abortion has brought bipartisan agreement for more than four decades.   Ensuring Americans aren't forced to pay for elective abortions is the common ground on abortion in America. Indeed, in an FRC commissioned survey after the election, 56 percent of Americans said they do not want to be forced to pay for elective abortion.   It's time this long-time consensus be solidified into statutory law.

"In contrast, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's effort to topple the wall between taxpayers and the abortion industry is just another example of how out of touch her party is with most Americans.

"Family Research Council urges the Senate to vote in favor of this fair and commonsense legislation," concluded Perkins.
