FalconStor Operates on Emmen Hospital's Storage System to Deliver Vital Healthcare Benefits
FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq:FALC), the leading developer of proven
data protection solutions, and their business partner Systems 4U, today
announced a major improvement in the storage infrastructure health of
Scheper Ziekenhuis Emmen (SZE/Emmen Hospital) through the deployment of
FalconStor's IPStor solution. IPStor now guarantees SZE the highest
possible availability of access to patient records and other crucial
hospital I.T. systems. IPStor also provides storage virtualisation,
complementing SZE's virtual server environment and maximising overall
flexibility.
Like many modern organizations, SZE had already invested in a fully
integrated Storage Area Network (SAN) environment providing storage to
two separate server centres located in the same hospital building. With
plenty of capacity in the storage subsystems, SZE intended to use the
SAN not only for the core hospital administration systems but for
additional applications including email.
At the same time, SZE faced a 2007 deadline to set up an entirely new
system that guarantees - to authorized healthcare personnel only -
access to patient records at all times; to provide, in effect, the
highest possible levels of availability of those records. This was
achieved through two steps.
First, SZE's application servers were virtualized using VMWare®,
enabling failover in the event of a server failure and load-balancing at
peak times. While this ensured that systems and processing power were
always available, it would not ensure that the data was always
available. To address this, an IPStor Platform server was deployed in
each server room with its failover option enabled, and a mirror option
that enables the creation of a mirror image of data created by either
IPStor server.
This solution meant that SZE not only acquired the mirroring option it
wanted, but also created a high availability solution at the same time:
if a storage subsystem or IPStor server was to fail, the second IPStor
server – or the mirrored data –
would be accessible automatically. SZE particularly prized the fact that
the deployment could be completed without physical alteration to the
incumbent infrastructure.
Marcel Meijer, system engineer at SZE, said: "The
success of this deployment lies in our decision to virtualise our
resources, both server and storage. There is now always sufficient
processing power to run the applications, there is always access to the
data, and we have also eliminated the poor storage management associated
with having direct-attached storage for each application server.”
The deployment was performed by FalconStor partner Systems4U. Product
Manager Robert Wilhelm said: "Being able to
advise the customer that we could do the integration without physically
changing the infrastructure was a very powerful advantage. It's actually
possible to shut down one entire server room now, without any downtime
for either clients or servers. It has helped SZE to meet a very
important objective regarding patient record accessibility.”
Wim Brosens, Storage Architect BeNeLux , FalconStor, said: "SZE's
set up has created a mirror, but has also created in the same
environment a disaster recovery, high availability solution, perfectly
illustrating the flexibility and advantages of IPStor. It's changed very
little physically, but has changed everything conceptually.”
The Scheper Ziekenhuis Emmen (SZE) employs 1500 people, who deliver
healthcare services to patients from across the region of Drenthe in the
northeast of The Netherlands. More than 20,000 patients per year are
admitted to the 381-bed facility, with a further 182,000 outpatients
visiting clinics.
