EtherPHAST-24 Completes TranSwitch Multi-Client Mapper Family; OEMs Ca
Business Editors/Technology Editors
SHELTON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 2005--TranSwitch(R) Corporation (NASDAQ: TXCC), a leading provider of high-speed Broadband, Transport and Switching semiconductor solutions for voice, data and video communications, today announced availability of the EtherPHAST(TM)-24 dual OC-12 mapper-framer, a complementary member of the company's family of EtherMap(R) and EtherPHAST transport devices for Ethernet, SAN, TDM and packet clients. The EtherPHAST-24, which has been designed into a major OEM's platform, targets multi-service applications including full rate GigE and sub-rate SAN requirements in small to large MSPP/ADM/CWDM platforms where redundant OC-12 (622Mbs) mapping bandwidth is optimal, or where a single device supports two OC-12 ring interfaces. This device also has associated price performance advantages over more costly full rate OC-48 solutions.
EtherPHAST-24 complements TranSwitch's EtherPHAST-48 Plus full rate OC-48 EoS/SAN framer-mapper, and the EtherMap-12 and EtherMap-3 Pt lower rate OC-12 and OC-3 EoS mappers. The intelligent software API driver/firmware set and external interfaces used for the EtherPHAST-24 are identical to the EtherPHAST-48 Plus, allowing customers to leverage their software integration and board design across multiple projects with different bandwidth rates and interface requirements. Like the EtherPHAST-48 Plus, the EtherPHAST-24 features telecom bus expansion port and an internal cross-connect. Thus customers can design highly flexible and scalable system solutions utilizing a combination of EtherPHAST-24 and EtherMap-12 or EtherMap-3 devices to provide a rich mix of high order and low order mapping, cross connection and grooming for VCAT/LCAS applications.
"Equipment manufacturers can now implement appropriately dimensioned, cost-effective transport devices rather than force fit an oversized device that carries a penalty in terms of higher cost, power, interfaces and more bandwidth than is necessary," said Rob Schwaber, product marketing manager for TranSwitch. "With the EtherPHAST-24, for example, they can satisfy transport requirements today and migrate seamlessly to the OC-48 solution tomorrow, safeguarding their investments and resources.
"This makes sense," continued Schwaber, "considering the large number of pizza box/Micro MSPP designs being built for the broadband Customer Edge that efficiently share board designs in a product family with larger systems serving the Provider Edge networks."
The EtherPHAST-24 provides extremely low latency mapping of multiple protocols over SONET. It has an "ANY-Mapper" capability utilizing four available terminal interfaces for 1) line side SONET/SDH or backplanes, 2) telecom bus for expansion, aggregation or protection, 3) SerDes-based interface for high speed GigE, and 4) lower speed interfaces for fast Ethernet, sub-rate FC, ESCON, packet or DVB-ASI. All four terminals may be configured for any port to any port data path grooming providing unprecedented flexibility for a wide array of applications. These interface combinations can then take advantage of many encapsulation and cross-connect capabilities internal to the device, including GFP framed and transparent mode, PPP/BCP, HDLC, transparent HDLC and LAPS. LCAS is supported in the device, as well as standard and arbitrary pointer-based non-standard contiguous and virtual concatenations (VCAT) for SONET/SDH, which allow a rich set of transport options.
EtherPHAST-24 contains substantial on chip buffering for ingress/egress packets leading to lower costs, optimal performance and reduced latency for oversubscribed Ethernet flow control and packet backpressure applications. Multiplexed dual Multi-protocol Packet Interfaces (MPI) provide VCAT/LCAS and/or GFP direct mapping access (for example, ATM over VCAT/LCAS). EtherPHAST-24 is packaged in an 844-pin Super Flip Chip Ball Grid Array (SFCBGA). Its design is based on .13 micron technology.
The EtherPHAST-24 device is part of the field proven EtherMap(R) and EtherPHAST(R) product families. Key benefits include multi-port/multi-rate standards compliance, multi-encapsulation capability, and a high degree of bandwidth granularity, resulting in reduced platform cost, faster Time-To-Market (TTM), and greater revenue generation for OEMs and Service Providers.
