EaglePicher Demonstrates Full-Power Testing of Non-Propagating Battery Modules for a Prototype Energy Magazine System
ST. LOUIS, Dec. 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- EaglePicher® Technologies, a leading provider of battery power systems, under contract from Leonardo DRS and the US Navy, conducted a full-power test of its lithium-ion battery system for the Navy's Energy Magazine Prototype. The Energy Magazine Prototype is a power system component, which integrates power delivery with energy storage, and is designed to meet the increasing demand for available shipboard electrical power. Through a previous test in May 2020 at EaglePicher's test facility, the battery modules demonstrated the anti-propagation requirements of the program.
EaglePicher's successful test is a significant milestone for developing a safe lithium-ion energy storage system.
The recent full-power test utilized a cabinet with multiple battery modules to meet the Navy Energy Magazine Prototype requirements. The full-power test was conducted at EaglePicher's test facilities located in Joplin MO. These same cells and battery management system (BMS), were also tested by Naval Sea Systems Command Carderock Division earlier this year and met or exceed cell balancing and capacity fade expectations over 2000 cycles.
The primary charge and discharge test lasted just under two hours and included 10 full cycles. This multiple cycle test was followed by four additional full charge and discharge cycles with randomly selected line-replacement units (LRU) in bypass mode. These last four tests demonstrated the Energy Magazine Prototype performance margin and the ability to bypass any module on command. All test objectives were met.
"This is a significant milestone for the full power and energy of a safe lithium-ion energy storage system that has never been done before," stated Rich Schroeder, Director of Business Operations for EaglePicher. "EaglePicher's investment in a new production line for this battery module moves us another step closer to providing this technology to the Navy."
