SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2005--Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. (E&S(R)) (NASDAQ: ESCC) -- Hawaii's Mauna Kea Astronomy Education Center (MKAEC) has selected E&S Digital Theater to produce the "signature" show for their new planetarium that will feature Digistar(R) 3 Laser.
In a competitive bid, E&S was selected to produce a 20-minute, 360-degree, full-dome spectacle that brings to life the story of the legendary volcano Mauna Kea and its impact on Hawaiian culture and the science of astronomy. The show is scheduled for completion in December 2005.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to create a show that will explore the importance of Mauna Kea, not only to the Hawaiian community, but to the astronomical community worldwide," said Michael Daut, E&S Digital Theater's director of show production. "Through the eyes of Hawaii's rich heritage, we will create a completely immersive show that will reveal Mauna Kea as a cultural icon and a wellspring of scientific knowledge."
E&S Digital Theater's vice president and general manager, Kirk Johnson, said, "This summer, Hilo will be the home of one of the world's first Digistar 3 Laser systems, and we're honored that we were chosen to produce this exciting show for the Mauna Kea Astronomy Education Center."
Located at the base of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea, MKAEC sits below the world's premier site for ground-based astronomical research. Thousands of astronomers use the 13 telescopes atop Mauna Kea to collect astronomical data each year. These observatories combined produce a significant portion of today's astronomical discoveries.
About Evans & Sutherland's Digistar 3
From Shreveport to Shanghai, London to Laredo, Kiel to Kobe, and Athens to Amarillo, planetarium operators around the world have been discovering the many advantages of Digistar 3, the world's leading digital planetarium system. With full-dome video playback, real-time computer graphics, and a complete 3D digital astronomy package fully integrated into a single theater system, Digistar 3 has launched a new, affordable era for immersive theater experiences. Digistar 3 eliminates the need for dozens of additional special effects projectors and other equipment, significantly reducing the cost of building and running a planetarium or domed theater.
About Evans & Sutherland's Digistar 3 Laser
Digistar 3 Laser is a revolutionary new digital planetarium system that combines the features and power of Digistar 3 with the highest resolution video projection system in the world. Using the revolutionary E&S Laser Projector (ESLP(R)), Digistar 3 Laser is able to display nearly 16 million pixels on the dome -- over twice the image resolution of Digistar 3 using six CRT-based video projectors. Plus, the ESLP offers expanded color space: 12 bits per pixel (36-bit color) instead of the standard 8 bits per pixel (24-bit color). Digistar 3 Laser's ability to reproduce color exceeds any other visual display medium, including motion picture film.
