LPKF Sets its Sights on New Markets Garbsen, February 15, 2016 - The trend toward miniaturization in the electronics industry is in full swing; electronic components are becoming increasingly complex and require an unprecedented level of precision in machining. In view of this, laser specialist LPKF has set its sights on two new markets.

Laser Systems for Research LPKF is a world leader when it comes to providing mechanical and laser-based systems for the production of printed circuit board prototypes for development. Lars Fuehrmann, strategic product manager for this area explains, "We are receiving increasingly frequent requests from research departments for the processing of particularly sophisticated materials. Our clients need flexible processes that operate with great precision and guarantee reliable process control." LPKF sees growth potential in the new "scientific prototyping" market and groups all laser systems outside of traditional printed circuit board processing therein. Laser systems for research departments have already been introduced into the market and are capable, for example, of creating microfluidics for medical devices, cut resistant ceramics, or generate invisible structures on transparent substrates. "In the long term, we can assume that technologies that are currently being used in research will be the norm in mass production within a few years," says Head of Division Britta Schulz, "Therefore, it is best to get our foot in the door early on."

Laser Systems for the Chip Industry An entirely new market into which LPKF will be penetrating this year is the semi-conductor market. As the first link in the electronics production chain, chip manufacturers are setting the pace and pressing ahead with miniaturization. It is be-coming increasingly common for electronic components on circuit boards to be arranged one on top of the other rather than next to one another. Multi-chip modules are placing new demands on chip package assemblies and on the materials used. With the Vitrion 5000, LPKF has introduced a system that can drill ultrafine holes in very thin glass (Through Glass Via). The TGV technology is particularly suitable for economically producing the redistribution layers (interposer) of the multi-chip modules at a very high quality. Consequently, chip manufacturers could switch over from silicon or organic materials to glass. They would thus reduce material costs and improve the performance of multi-chip modules. Multichip modules are increasingly being integrated into mobile devices such as smartphones and smartwatches as well as, e.g. high-end graphic cards. The potential for LPKF is to first establish glass as an economic alternative in the manufacture of interposers and then to equip the general semiconductor packaging market with the patent-pending TGV technology. "We have delivered the first Vitrion system to a customer in Asia for the production of glass interposers," states Head of Division Nils Heininger, "so, the first step is already done for LPKF's brand new market."

About LPKF The LPKF Laser & Electronics Group specializes in the manufacture of laser systems for micromachining and is a global leader in several areas.
