Cummins Honors Nine Employees at Indianapolis Conference; Awards Comme
Business Editors
COLUMBUS, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 28, 2005--Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) has honored nine employees with the first J. Irwin Miller Award of Excellence, named for the visionary former CEO of the Columbus-based company.
The recipients of the award best represent the values and ideals of Miller, who was a strong business leader and a model of integrity who built Cummins from a small diesel engine maker into a global powerhouse. Miller died in August 2004 at age 95.
The awards were presented in mid-February at Cummins Management Conference, an Indianapolis gathering of the company's top leaders from around the globe.
These winners, who received a shimmering blue globe on a silver metal base engraved with their names, embody the best of Cummins:
-- | Ginger Lirette, a Customer Tech Support Manager, at the Corporate Office Building in Columbus, has excelled in using Six Sigma quality assessment and improvement tools. She holds a record at Cummins - completing 13 quality improvement projects saving the company nearly $14 million. |
-- | Dana Vogt, Plant Manager at the Jamestown Engine Plant in Jamestown, N.Y. The Plant has used Six Sigma and the Team Based Work System to greatly improve productivity there. The number of engines built per day at Jamestown grew from 163 in early 2003 to more than 400 now. In January, the Jamestown plant set a new record of 448 engines built in a single day. |
-- | Wang Hongjie, General Manager, Engine Business Unit and Parts Market in East Asia, played a key role at the newly formed joint venture - Dongfeng Cummins Engine Company Limited (DCEC). He was one of about 10 people on the start-up team for the new joint venture and the plant construction in Xianfan City, Hubei Province, China. |
-- | Liu XiaoXing, Deputy General Manager at the Dongfeng Cummins Engine Plant in Xianfan City, Hubei Province, China. He worked to merge the smaller, original DCEC operation with the larger licensee plant of the Cummins and Dongfeng Automobile Company Limited. His success can be measured by the productivity of the expanded joint venture - DCEC now produces 120,000 engines per year, ranking second among Cummins plants worldwide. |
-- | Guillermo Illanes, the General Manager of Distribudora Cummins Chile, Illanes led the transformation of the distributorship into an independent business, implementing a cost reduction plan and reorienting the service department to focus on customers. |
-- | Wayne Eckerle, Executive Director of Research and Technology at the Cummins Technical Center in Columbus, was the primary leader in analysis-led design. That is a process that uses simulation and computer analysis instead of expensive prototypes to test engines, saving millions in costs and reducing development time. |
-- | Steve Charlton, Executive Director of 2007 Heavy Duty Engines, who as the principal architect of the EGR-based engine design helped the company meet 2002 emissions standards for diesel engines. |
-- | Shelley Stewart, former Director of Benefits Strategy and now Executive Director, Risk Management, led initiatives which helped Cummins reduce the number of vendors providing heath care to Cummins employees and kept cost increases below the national average. |
-- | Vince Akers, Executive Director of Cummins Tax Department, has developed strategies that have helped Cummins maintain a relatively low and predictable tax rate. |
