Construction begins for a new Habitat for Humanity home in Prince Albert

PRINCE ALBERT, SK, Aug. 21, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and the Honourable Joe Hargrave, Minister of Crown Investment Corporations and MLA for Prince Albert Carlton, on behalf of the Honourable Paul Merriman, Minister of Social Services and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), joined Jan Thomas, Executive Director of Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity and community members to break ground on construction of a new Habitat for Humanity home in Prince Albert.

This Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) home will be more affordable and will help improve the quality of life of a Prince Albert family.

• The Federal and Provincial Governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing approximately $50,000 under the federal/provincial Investment in Affordable Housing 2014-2019 Agreement to support Habitat for Humanity's efforts in making homeownership a reality for this Saskatchewan family in Prince Albert.
• The home will be a 1,175 ft² (109 m²) bungalow with a partially developed basement. The home will be located at 589 24^th Street East in Prince Albert.
• The Province's overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity totals $10.85 million since March 2009. This total includes $1 million announced with the 2018-2019 provincial budget, with funding from the federal/provincial Investment in Affordable Housing 2014-2019 Agreement.
• The Government of Canada is currently rolling out its National Housing Strategy (NHS)—an ambitious 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need as well as repair and renew more than 300,000 housing units and reduce chronic homelessness by 50 percent.
• The NHS is built on strong partnerships between federal, provincial and territorial governments, and on continuous engagement with others, including municipalities, Indigenous governments and organizations, and the social and private sectors to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Canadians.
• This investment supports Saskatchewan's Housing Strategy by ensuring Saskatchewan people in greatest need have access to affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
• Habitat's innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home or other Habitat homes.
