Chipotle Trading Chorizo For Queso

(RTTNews) - Mexican-themed restaurant Chipotle reportedly plans to cut down chorizo from its menu.

According to CNBC, the burrito chain confirmed that it is ditching chorizo, the spicy chicken-and-pork sausage meat. The chorizo was added to menu in late 2016. The company plans to use queso instead of chorizo, which it rolled out nationally on September 12.

Chorizo is reportedly the least popular protein among Chipotle customers, accounting for just 3% of total entree sales.

"When we decided to move forward with the national rollout of queso, we opted to replace chorizo on the line with queso, so chorizo is going away," Chris Arnold, spokesman for Chipotle, told CNBC via email. "While we really liked the chorizo (and many customers did too), the efficiency of our model has always been rooted in part, in doing just a few things so we can do them really well."
