Dr. Alper has been recognized as a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine since 1964.

Early in his career, Dr. Alper worked as a research associate in medicine at the Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital. He also fulfilled a brief appointment as scientific director of the Blood Grouping Laboratory in the early 1970s. After the merger of that organization with the Protein Foundation to form the Center for Blood Research, Dr. Alper became its Scientific Director and that of its successor organizations over the next 18 years. Beginning in 1969, Dr. Alper worked as an associate professor of pediatrics with Harvard Medical School until 1975, when he was appointed to the role of professor.
