    FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 28, 2005--

Newest-Generation Chipset Brings Last Mile Access Further, Faster for High-Bandwidth Voice, Video and Data Services

Centillium Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTLM), a leading provider of broadband access solutions, today announced that it has extended its technology leadership position in the DSL access infrastructure market with the introduction of the company's Pharos(TM) ADSL central office (CO) physical layer (PHY) chipset. The Pharos chipset is designed to meet the high-performance requirements of quality of service (QoS)-based "triple play" applications, such as broadcast services, video streaming, video on-demand and next-generation gaming services. Centillium's newest-generation DSL solution provides the industry's highest performance and longest reach, with speeds of up to 50 Mbps and reach up to 8 kilometers. Pharos is spectrally compatible with the VDSL2 long reach technology.
Customers can make use of a common line-card design with the Pharos chipset that supports both Annex A and Annex B. This makes the Pharos chipset ideal for customers striving for lower system cost and faster deployment of premium broadband services across multiple markets. The company's innovative eXtremeDSL MAX(TM) technology enables service providers to achieve last mile DSL access even further and faster from the CO to residential and enterprise locations.
"The DSL semiconductor market will achieve 5 percent annualized growth over the next 5 years, in large part due to the explosion in demand of triple play services on both the consumer- and enterprise-side," said Ken Furer, research analyst, semiconductors, IDC. "QoS-enabled solutions and ADSL2/2+/2++ technology will continue to drive the growth of the DSL market globally as the benefits of longer reach and faster speeds enable even more applications in businesses and homes.
"Centillium has shown continued leadership and commitment by introducing products that drive next-generation broadband access solutions," said Saint P. Lee, executive director, R&D, Dasan Networks, a leading networking solutions company based in Seoul, Korea. "Dasan has chosen Centillium's Pharos chipset for its high-density IPDSLAM application because it will enable us to deliver high-performance, feature-rich ADSL-based last mile access solutions. In addition, the Pharos chipset will allow us to build common hardware platforms for different regions of the world, thereby reducing development time and accelerating time-to-market."
The Pharos ADSL CO PHY consists of a single monolithic 12-port digital processor and a two-port analog front-end with integrated line drivers that are optimized for Annexes A, B and C. The Pharos chipset supports global ADSL2/2+ standards and, in addition, supports ADSL2++, now in the process of consideration for standardization. For Annexes A and B, customers can employ a common line-card design that can be used for different geographical deployments with flexibility and ease of a simple firmware command execution.
"We've once again raised the bar in the ADSL2 industry by bringing a solution that addresses the QoS, performance and cost requirements that customers are asking for in the broadband access market today," said Tony Shakib, vice president and general manager, Access and Networking business units for Centillium. "We continue our commitment to technology innovation and have designed a chipset that is spectrally-compatible with VDSL2 technology, a further proof point of the solution's high speed and extended reach."

    Pharos Chipset Features

-- Integration: The Pharos chipset integrates the line drivers on the analog front-end. This feature, coupled with additional integration of external components such as tone and metering filters, reduces total component count.

-- Cost-effective: The highly-integrated architecture combined with low power and reduced bill of materials cost enable manufacturers to produce high-density, cost-effective line-card designs.

-- Feature-rich: Centillium's technologically superior QoS-enabling features such as dual latency, dynamic rate repartitioning and seamless rate adaptation all support differentiated triple play services, allowing service providers to increase average revenue per user (ARPU).

-- Meets Service Provider Cost/Performance Requirements: Patented Dual and Single Ended Line Testing (DELT/SELT) features enable service providers to perform remote diagnostics, troubleshooting and provisioning, eliminating maintenance and truck-roll costs. This, along with low power consumption and on-chip power management, reduces the overall operational expenses and increases profit margins for the service providers.

    Availability

Engineering samples are available now with customer samples available at the end of Q105.
