CareScience Chosen to Provide Red Cross Blood Services with Blood Utilization Data
CareScience, a division of Quovadx, Inc. (Nasdaq: QVDX) providing care management, clinical analysis and clinical quality improvement solutions, today announced that the American Red Cross will make a CareScienceTM Blood Utilization Reference Report available to its hospital and health system customers interested in blood management and patient care practices. The CareScience Blood Utilization Reference Report will help the American Red Cross to support its customers’ work in physician education and management, hospital and physician evaluation and care guideline development. The American Red Cross is making the CareScience Blood Utilization Reference Report available to interested hospitals via a password protected, secure Web page. "We believe evidence-based guidelines for blood usage can be of significant value to our customers. The Red Cross is committed to serving our customers’ needs and ensuring a sufficient supply of blood products to healthcare providers,” remarked Scott Buker, director, hospital national accounts, Biomedical Services, American Red Cross. "The CareScience Blood Utilization Reference Report will help the hospitals and health systems we serve in their blood management efforts.” The CareScience Blood Utilization Reference Report contains blood utilization information for nine disease groups, identified in conjunction with CareScience clients as high disease groups for blood utilization. Blood utilization information in the report is derived from data from over 60,000 inpatient encounters in acute care hospitals across the United States contained in the CareScience client database. The report will provide users with the utilization of red blood cells, platelets, and fresh frozen plasma, including the percent of patients transfused and the average number of units transfused. "We are proud to work with the American Red Cross and assist in improving blood product usage in the United States,” said Thomas H. Zajac, president, CareScience and executive vice president of Quovadx. "The CareScience Blood Utilization Report is just one example of how CareScience’s patient data can help hospitals in their benchmarking and quality improvement efforts. We believe that by using the CareScience Blood Utilization Report, hospitals and health networks will be able to compare their current practices to identify ways to improve blood utilization and reduce costs, and using the information at their fingertips to support safe and effective care for their patients.” About CareScience CareScience, a division of Quovadx, Inc.
