CAEP Recognizes Praxis Core for Accreditation Purposes

PRINCETON, N.J., Dec. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation has determined that the Praxis^® Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) Tests provide evidence that educator preparation programs are admitting qualified cohorts of candidates.

CAEP, the accreditation organization for teacher education, recently awarded this recognition after a rigorous examination of research evidence provided by Educational Testing Service. Their review determined, among other conclusions, that Praxis Core is an appropriate measure of teacher candidates' skills and that it's backed by strong validity evidence. Furthermore, Praxis Core is reliable, fair, and free from bias for any subgroup in the teacher candidate population.

"Our Praxis Core assessments fairly measures academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics," said Seth Weiner, Executive Director of the Praxis Program. "They provide a comprehensive measure of the skills and content knowledge of candidates entering teacher preparation programs."

In addition, for candidates who did not earn program entry based on their SAT® or ACT® scores, Praxis Core provides a second chance to demonstrate reading, writing and mathematics skills after two years of college*.

During the 2016-17 academic year, 32,667 students interested in teaching took the Praxis Core assessment. These students — from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 5 territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands) — sent their Praxis Core scores to approximately 862 educator preparation programs, in 44 states, the District of Columbia and 5 territories, as a first step on the path to being an educator.
