Budget 2017 Departmental Reviews: Improving Results for Canadians
OTTAWA, Sept. 22, 2017 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is committed to the responsible use of Canadians' tax dollars and to making smart, necessary and impactful investments. That is why federal departments continuously look for ways to improve the delivery of results, increase efficiency and better align resources with government priorities and Canadians' needs and expectations.
As part of Budget 2017, the Government announced the launch of new departmental reviews. Three organizations have been selected for a review:
- The Canada Border Services Agency
- The Canada School of Public Service
- Health Canada
Government organizations are selected for departmental reviews based on several factors. These factors can include changes to mandate and priorities; a need to assess an organization's business model; a balance of small, medium and large organizations; and type of service they provide to Canadians.
The goal of the departmental reviews is to ensure that departmental spending is aligned with priorities and that programs deliver results for Canadians. While cost-savings may be a byproduct of the reviews, they are not the goal of the exercise. The ongoing monitoring of programs and services is simply part of good governance.
Quote
"Our Government is steadfast in ensuring that taxpayers' dollars are used wisely on programs and services that deliver real results for middle-class Canadians and those working hard to join them."
- The Honourable Scott Brison, President of the Treasury Board
Quick Facts
- Ministers are leading the reviews of their respective departments. The President of the Treasury Board is overseeing reviews and the Treasury Board Secretariat will work with organizations to support them throughout the review process.
- Budget 2017 also announced reviews of fixed assets and business innovation and clean technology programs. The Government will report on the progress of all reviews in Budget 2018.
