Boston Globe Announces Senior Management Promotions

The Boston Globe today announced three promotions withinits senior management team, with Alfred S. Larkin, Jr. becomingexecutive vice president, Susan Hunt Stevens becoming senior vicepresident of circulation and marketing, and Jill Kremins becoming vicepresident of circulation marketing.

Mr. Larkin's broad portfolio of responsibilities covers theGlobe's corporate communications, organizational development, andcommunity relations including the Globe Foundation. He also serves asa senior adviser to Richard Gilman, publisher of The Boston Globe, andother members of the New England Media Group's senior managementincluding Mary Jacobus, president and general manager of the Globe,and Rick Daniels, president of Boston Globe Media. The new position iseffective today. He will continue to report to Mr. Gilman.

"Al's new position reflects the instrumental role that he plays inthe management of the company. He knows what makes this organizationtick. He knows the community, he knows journalism, he knows what weseek to accomplish as a business," Mr. Gilman said. "Al bringsseasoned judgment and wisdom to the issue of the moment and theobjectives of the future."

Ms. Stevens will oversee the Globe's consumer marketing functions,which include circulation sales and operations, market research,merchandising, and marketing communications. The promotion iseffective March 20. Ms. Stevens succeeds Yasmin Namini, who recentlywas promoted to run the circulation department of The New York Times.Ms. Stevens will report to Ms. Jacobus.

Ms. Jacobus said, "Susan brings a strong strategic approach tobuilding the Globe's full readership and circulation potential withinthis market. Susan has shown tremendous drive and ability in herleadership position of vice president of circulation marketing and hassuccessfully led several major projects for the Globe."

Effective March 20, Jill Kremins will assume the circulationmarketing responsibilities of the newspaper's home delivery, databaseand youth marketing functions, and will report into Ms. Stevens. "Jillhas a great ability to lead a team of people with tremendousenthusiasm, energy and intelligence. She has a wealth of experience inproduct development and marketing," said Ms. Stevens.

Mr. Larkin, 58, joined the Globe in 1972 as a reporter and held avariety of management positions in the newsroom. He moved to thebusiness side of the newspaper in 1997 as Assistant to the Publisherand most recently has been Senior Vice President for GeneralAdministration and External Affairs. A native of Boston, he attendedNortheastern University and was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism atHarvard University. He currently serves on the boards of theMassachusetts Newspaper Publishers Association and Milton Residencesfor the Elderly and is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Boysand Girls Clubs of Boston.

Ms. Stevens, 36, joined the Globe in 2002 as vice president ofcirculation marketing. Prior to joining the Globe, Ms. Stevens was thePresident of Abridge, Inc, an enterprise software company in New YorkCity. Abridge was an industry leader in finding business patterns andtrends by analyzing unstructured communications data, like email andInstant Messages. Previously, Ms. Stevens was the Group Director ofMarketing for New York Times Digital, the online division of The NewYork Times Company, and worked as a management consultant forAlexander & Alexander, Mercer Management Consulting and APM.

Ms. Stevens received her MBA from The Amos Tuck School of Businessat Dartmouth College, where she graduated as an Edward Tuck Scholar;she holds a BA in Government from Wesleyan University. She also serveson the board of the Center for Women in Enterprise, a non-profit inBoston that helps women achieve economic self-sufficiency andprosperity through entrepreneurship.

Ms. Kremins, 44, joined the Globe in 2005 as director of audiencemarketing. Prior to working at the Globe, Ms. Kremins was vicepresident of marketing and business development at Sentient Jet. Ms.Kremins also worked at Fleet Boston Financial in a variety ofmarketing and product development roles. Ms. Kremins holds an MBA fromNortheastern University and a BS from Syracuse University.
