Binghamton Simulator Company Wins US Military Contract Using Concurrent Products
Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) - Concurrent (Nasdaq: CCUR), a worldwide leader in real-time Linux®-based computing technologies, and Binghamton Simulator Company (BSC), a Concurrent channel partner specializing in military and commercial flight simulation solutions, today announced that the Naval Air Systems (NAS) Command has awarded BSC a contract for the Aircrew Virtual Environment Trainer (AVET) program. BSC is building the Navy’s first AVET unit using Concurrent’s iHawk™ real-time multiprocessor systems powered by RedHawk™ Linux as the simulation host computer. The AVET program will provide safer and more cost-effective training for Navy airmen.
"iHawk has a proven track record as a Linux simulation platform that delivers real-time performance, reliability and maintainability,” said David King, chief marketing officer, Concurrent. "Our valuable partnership with BSC focuses on innovative, comprehensive simulation solutions for military training in the 21st century."
BSC delivered a prototype AVET to the Fleet Replacement Squadron 2 (FRS 2) at NAS Norfolk in September 2008 for a 90-day evaluation. Concurrent’s iHawk system is serving as the simulator host. The prototype unit is a virtual environment trainer that demonstrates the technology BSC developed under a recent Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the Navy.
"The BSC product line of Aircrew Virtual Environment Trainer solutions provides military personnel with a safer more economical means to increase proficiency in a variety of necessary skill sets,” said Terry Lewis, president, BSC. "Concurrent iHawk-hosted trainers decrease the number of flight hours and airframe time needed for pilots to fly training missions resulting in a better prepared aircrew with a significant cost savings to the customer.”
The fully functional AVET is scheduled to be delivered to Naval Air Station North Island in September 2009, and will be the first of several projected units to support U. S. Navy aircrew readiness training. Concurrent is providing BSC with integrated iHawk platforms running the RedHawk Linux real-time operating system, as well as Concurrent NightStar advanced debugging and analysis tools and MAXAda 95 language system.
The AVET will provide cost efficient and safe 24/7 training for crew chiefs, aerial gunners, hoist and rescue personnel (search and rescue) and vertical replenishment personnel It will aide aircrews in achieving increased proficiency in a multitude of skill sets, as well as increased situational awareness.
