Avnet Tech Games Registration Opens for Third Virtual Competition
Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a leading global technology distributor, has announced that registration is now open for college students across the nation to compete in the third virtual games of the Avnet Tech Games. The virtual games help students prepare for real-world business opportunities and compete for a chance to win $1,000 scholarships. The fall virtual games include the Android™ App Challenge, the HP Solutions Playbook Challenge and the RedPrairie Supply Chain Challenge.
The virtual games expand the breadth of the Avnet Tech Games, which are held each April at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Ariz. This annual collegiate competition challenges Arizona students to solve real-world problems with technology. Both the traditional competitive events of the Avnet Tech Games and the virtual games require students to test their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem solving and technical skills. The virtual games allow students to work in teams or independently, competing on a national level.
"We launched the virtual games one year ago to create an opportunity for students to compete on a year-round basis and participate regardless of where they are located. With 425 students competing in the fall 2009 and spring 2010 virtual games, we are reaching more students than ever before with the Avnet Tech Games. We look forward to another great turnout in our fall virtual games,” said Teri Radosevich, vice president of Community Relations for Avnet, Inc.
The fall virtual games include:
- Android™ App Challenge – Students develop a Google Android™ App using Google’s Android™ SDK and Open API.
- HP Solutions Playbook Challenge – Students compete to design the best all-around Data Center Solution Playbook, a time-saving reference guide on how to solve specific customer challenges.
- RedPrairie Supply Chain Challenge – Students aim to maximize profits by managing assets (inventory, equipment and cash) within a virtual factory.
Registration for the Android™ App Challenge and HP Solutions Playbook Challenge opens September 1, 2010 and closes September 17, 2010. The RedPrairie Supply Chain Challenge registration will open later this fall. Winning students may apply their scholarship to any accredited college in the U.S. The scholarships are made possible by a generous donation from the Carstens Family Funds.
In addition, to competing in the fall virtual games, students can participate in a digital contest to convert binary code to text. Students who successfully translate the code by September 15, 2010, will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win an Xbox 360. The winner will be announced on September 20, 2010.
