ARUP Laboratories and Cerner Continue to Modernize the Laboratory; Reference Laboratory Agrees to Host Solutions in Cerner State-of-the-Art Data Center

    Business Editors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. & SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 2005--ARUP Laboratories, a national reference laboratory and leader in innovative laboratory research and development, is expanding a 20-year relationship with Cerner Corp. to enhance laboratory operations with the healthcare information technology leader's most advanced solution through remote hosting capabilities.
"Our longstanding partnership with Cerner provides a great opportunity to further grow our laboratories with a proven supplier at the forefront of managing high volumes of transactions," said Carl Kjeldsberg, M.D., chief executive officer, ARUP Laboratories. "Cerner will give us access to the most powerful and sophisticated solutions and help minimize our capital outlays."
Through remote hosting at Cerner's state-of-the-art data center, ARUP will access Cerner's clinical solutions without the upfront capital and resources required to build, maintain and secure an IT infrastructure onsite. Using this capability, ARUP can focus more time on providing high-quality results and less time managing an IT system at its facilities.
The upgrade to Cerner's latest technology will enable ARUP to anticipate and efficiently meet the needs of a growing population and increased number of tests. Using PathNet(R) and Millennium Helix(TM), ARUP can completely automate its clinical and management processes, streamlining workflows, improving turnaround times and reducing costs. As laboratory professionals administer care, manage specimens, run tests, and remit bills, these solutions collect, share and intelligently display all critical information, including complex genetic information.
"We have a strong, 20-year relationship with ARUP Laboratories, and this partnership builds on our goal to transform clients through advanced information and knowledge and technology," said J.P. Fingado, Cerner's vice president and general manager of clinical centers. "Organizations like ARUP demand laboratory solutions that are scalable to large volumes of data, capable of managing extensive test catalogs and able to incorporate growth areas like genetic testing. Cerner continues to take ARUP and others to the next level."
The agreement between Cerner and ARUP was signed in the first quarter of 2005.

ARUP Laboratories is a national clinical and anatomic pathology reference laboratory owned by the University of Utah. With nearly 1,800 employees, ARUP offers in excess of 2,000 tests and test combinations, ranging from routine screening tests to highly esoteric molecular and genetic assays, for patients throughout the country. Rather than competing with its clients for physician office business, ARUP chooses instead to support clients' existing test menus by offering highly complex and unique tests, with accompanying consultative support, to enhance their abilities to provide local and regional laboratory services. ARUP's clients include more than half of the nation's university teaching hospitals and children's hospitals, as well as multihospital groups, major commercial laboratories, group purchasing organizations, military and government facilities, and major clinics. In addition, ARUP is a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development, led by the efforts of the ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology.
