Apple IPhone Losing U.S., Europe Market Share

(RTTNews) - Apple (AAPL) enjoyed a late push from sales of its newest iPhone models, but lost year-over-year market share to Samsung in the United States and Europe, according to new figures from industry watcher Kantar Worldpanel.

Kantar reports Apple's smartphone market share was down about 10 percentage points from 53 percent to 43.1 percent in the U.S. through November of last year. Across the major markets in Europe, iOS was down 6.5 percentage points.

Meanwhile, rival Android's U.S. market share jumped 8 points from 42.3 percent during the same time period. Apple's woes continued in Europe -- Android dominates there, with a 69 percent market share, up from 61.5 percent.

"While there's no doubt that sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C have been strong, resurgent performances from LG, Sony, and Nokia have made making year-on-year share gains increasingly challenging for Apple," Kantar Strategic Insight Director Dominic Sunnebo said in a statement released Monday. "Windows Phone, for example, is now the third-largest OS across Europe with 10 percent -- more than double its share compared with last year."

Windows Phone (MSFT) makes up only 4.7 percent of the market here in the U.S, up from 2.6 percent. But in the big five European markets, Windows market share jumped from 4.7 percent to 10 percent.

BlackBerry's (BBRY) troubles continue everywhere; the operating system now accounts for just 0.6 percent in the U.S. and 1.6 percent of sales across the big five European markets.
