Angeion Corporation Introduces the MedGraphics CCM Express(R), a New Product for the Critical Care Market
Angeion Corporation (NASDAQ:ANGN) today announced a new product, the
MedGraphics CCM Express® monitor, designed to
measure the nutritional requirements of patients in hospital intensive
care units (ICU) and critical care units (CCU). The CCM Express is
significantly smaller, easier to use and more cost effective than other
products currently available. The system was demonstrated at the annual
meeting of the European Respiratory Society in Stockholm, Sweden, and
received great interest.
The CCM Express is an extension of MedGraphic’s
core technology and expertise in determining patients’
respiratory function. This monitor is used to assess the caloric and
supplemental nutrition needs of hospitalized patients who can’t
eat or those who require intravenous or other specialized feeding
techniques such as in the intensive care or critical care unit.
The measurement is based upon the patient’s
inhaled and exhaled breath. This technology is used to accurately
measure the optimal nutritional requirements of acutely ill patients and
to assist in transitioning these patients from ventilator support to
breathing on their own. "Underfeeding or
overfeeding is a common problem in critically ill patients,”
Rod Young, President and CEO, commented. "Better
management of their nutrition and body fuel needs can shorten their
length of stay in the ICU and reduce their hospitalization costs. The
advanced technology in CCM Express enables the product to take up less
space in the ICU or CCU and is much easier to use than other devices.
These enabling features are highly important in the high-tech ICU/CCU
environment; CCM Express represents a new generation of indirect
calorimeters.”
According to market data, approximately 3,400 hospitals in the United
States have intensive care units with 4.5 to 5 million patients admitted
for intensive care annually. Research has shown that patients who
received correct nutritional support averaged a decreased length of stay
in the intensive care unit of approximately 1.5 days at a cost savings
to the health care system of approximately $4,000 per patient.
MedGraphics products are used in hospitals and physician offices around
the world for diagnosing and helping to manage therapy for patients with
cardiopulmonary diseases.
