Analysis Group Recognized as a Leading Global Economic Consultancy by "Global Competition Review"

BOSTON, Feb. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Analysis Group, one of the largest economics consulting firms, has been recognized as a leader on the Global Competition Review (GCR) Economics 20. The annual ranking represents top firms measured by size of practice, reputation, and work on impactful competition matters over the past year, including government investigations, litigations, and mergers.

"Our recognition in the Economics 20 reflects important work we are doing in helping clients to navigate the novel antitrust issues raised by today's complex business environment," said Martha S. Samuelson, CEO and Chairman of Analysis Group. Elaborating on this changing legal landscape, GCR quoted Ms. Samuelson: "Innovative approaches are being developed with respect to the tools and frameworks used to evaluate the resulting impact on pricing behavior, market definition, market power and potential exclusionary practices."

According to GCR, "economics can make or break a competition case," increasing the need for strong capabilities in this area to support any legal matter. Analysis Group's representation on the Economics 20 highlights the firm's role in some of the past year's most noteworthy cases. GCR called out the firm's involvement in several cases, including:

U.S. et al. v. Anthem Inc. et al.

  • Analysis Group supported Dr. David Dranove of Northwestern University, an academic affiliate of the firm, who served as the primary expert witness for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in its successful challenge of the proposed $54B merger of Anthem and Cigna, two of the five largest health insurance companies in the United States. Dr. Dranove's testimony on market definition, the impact on market concentration, competitive effects including the loss of innovation, the impact on medical costs, and entry was instrumental in the successful outcome.

In re: Optical Disk Drive Products Antitrust Litigation

  • Analysis Group worked on behalf of a joint defense group in a long-running, globe-spanning multi-district litigation alleging that optical disk drive manufacturers conspired to fix prices. The firm supported Dr. Edward Snyder of Yale School of Management, an academic affiliate of the firm, on damages issues. In the U.S. District Court for the District of Northern California, Judge Richard Seeborg awarded summary judgment for defendants Samsung, Toshiba, BenQ, and Samsung and Toshiba joint venture TSST, finding that plaintiff companies failed to show the alleged scheme targeted them specifically and that indirect purchasers failed to prove harm.

United States of America v. EnergySolutions, Inc. et al.

  • Analysis Group supported Dr. John Mayo of Georgetown University, an academic affiliate of the firm, who testified on behalf of the DOJ in its successful blocking of the proposed $367 million merger of EnergySolutions Inc. and Waste Control Specialists. Dr. Mayo's market analysis found that the proposed transaction would substantially limit competition and customer choice; following a two-week bench trial, the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware ruled against the merger.

In re: Disposable Contact Lens Antitrust Litigation

  • Analysis Group worked with a joint defense group in multidistrict litigation alleging that several major contact lens makers artificially inflated the prices of disposable contact lenses. The firm supported Dr. Snyder, as well as Analysis Group President Pierre Cremieux, in addressing issues related to class certification. The case remains pending before the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
