AmerUs Group's Chairman and CEO Roger K. Brooks Endows $1 Million to United Way of Central Iowa

AmerUs Group today announced that its chairman and chiefexecutive officer, Roger K. Brooks and his spouse Sunnie Richer haveendowed $1 million to the United Way of Central Iowa to support itsactivities in the Des Moines community. Their endowment has been madethrough the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation's LifeTown LegacySociety. The Greater Des Moines Community Foundation will manage theendowment's assets and will disburse five percent of the assetsannually to the United Way.

Brooks funded the endowment, in part, through a contribution ofAmerUs Group stock.

"Sunnie and I agreed that the United Way was clearly the best wayto give back to the community. The United Way of Central Iowa isexceptionally well-managed. We believe that it has tremendouspotential to make a positive difference in the lives of Iowans in needfor many years to come," said Brooks.

"With this gift, Roger has continued to provide great leadershipand set a wonderful example to all AmerUs employees on the importanceof giving back to the community," said Thomas C. Godlasky, presidentand chief operating officer of AmerUs Group.

In addition to their financial support, Brooks and Richer share aspecial personal connection to the United Way.

"I actually first met Sunnie when I paid a visit to her IBM officeseeking its support of United Way activities," said Brooks. "Wemarried just a few years later."

About Roger K. Brooks

Brooks is chairman and chief executive officer of AmerUs Group(NYSE:AMH), a position he has held for thirty-three years. Brooksjoined the company in 1959 as an actuarial assistant, and became acorporate officer three years later. He assumed his current positionin 1972.

Brooks drove the first-in-the-nation creation of a mutual holdingcompany, followed by a successful demutualization which distributedover $800 million to the company's policyowners. AmerUs Group isrecognized as a leader in the insurance industry. It has received thenational Points of Light award, and has been being named by Forbes asone of America's best-managed companies.

In addition to his professional achievements, Brooks was one ofthe initial inductees into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame, and hassince been inducted into the Iowa Business Hall of Fame. He alsoserves in various professional and civil capacities at the state,local and national levels with the American Council of Life Insurance,Belin-Blank Advisory Board, Des Moines Development, Des Moines ArtCenter, Des Moines Arts Festival, Greater Des Moines Partnership,Drake University, Iowa Methodist Medical Center and the YMCA. Brookshas also served as chairman for the Greater Des Moines Chamber ofCommerce and chair of the annual fundraising campaign for the UnitedWay of Central Iowa.

Brooks graduated magna cum laude from the University of Iowa witha bachelor of science degree in mathematics and is a graduate of theStanford Executive Program. Brooks is a Fellow in the Society ofActuaries and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Earlier this year Brooks announced that he plans to retire fromhis executive position with the company effective at the end of 2005.Brooks' retirement is part of a planned succession process that beganin 2003. Thomas C. Godlasky, now president and chief operating officerof the company, will continue as president and become chairman andchief executive officer concurrent with Brooks' retirement.
