American Express Introduces a New Way for Cardmembers to Pay at Amazon.com, Using Membership Rewards Points to Make Purchases

In an industry first, American Express today announced the launch of a new benefit that allows Membership Rewards points to be used for purchases at Amazon.com. Cardmembers enrolled in the Membership Rewards program can use points to pay for all or part of their Amazon.com purchases.

"Starting today, Cardmembers can use the billions of points they have accrued toward millions of items at Amazon.com,” said Lynne Biggar, senior vice president and general manager, Membership Rewards, American Express. "This is a major step forward in the evolution of the Membership Rewards program, which began as a travel-focused program and has since expanded to include dining, entertainment, retail and many more redemption options. Through the launch of this new benefit, we are now giving Cardmembers the added choice and flexibility to directly use rewards points to purchase anything from Kindles and books to electronics and sporting goods.”

A New Way to Pay

American Express Cardmembers enrolled in the Membership Rewards program will be able to use points toward millions of items on Amazon.com (www.amazon.com) across categories such as Books; Kindle; Movies, Music & Games; Computers & Office; Electronics; Home, Garden, & Pets; Grocery, Health & Beauty; Toys, Kids & Baby; Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry; Sports & Outdoors; Tools & Home Improvement; and Auto & Industrial. Cardmembers also continue to have the option to use points for rewards from more than 500 brands in the Membership Rewards program across popular categories, including Travel, Dining and Entertainment, Retail, and Charities.

"It’s exciting to work with American Express to offer their Cardmembers our vast selection of products and fast delivery through the launch of this new benefit,” said Matt Swann, vice president and general manager of Global Payments, Amazon.com. "Cardmembers will find using points on Amazon.com an easy and convenient way to shop at Amazon.com.”

Rewards Shopping on Amazon.com is Easy

Shopping with Membership Rewards points on Amazon.com is simple. Cardmembers need only complete a one-time registration to securely link their American Express Membership Rewards account to an Amazon.com account.

      1.

Go to www.amazon.com/membershiprewards and sign in with an existing Amazon.com account, or create a new one.

2. Cardmembers must then follow the instructions to link their Membership Rewards account to their Amazon.com account.
3. Membership Rewards points are available immediately for use on Amazon.com any time Cardmembers are shopping.

A Winning Formula

The new benefit builds on the popularity of the Membership Rewards Pay with Points feature launched in 2005, which introduced the ability for Cardmembers to use points toward flights, hotel stays, cruises and even vacation packages booked on americanexpress.com/travel. Since it launched, Pay with Points has quickly become and remains a very popular program feature for Cardmembers.
