Aeropostale Reports December Sales Results

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2005--Aeropostale, Inc. (NYSE: ARO), a mall-based specialty retailer of casual and active apparel for young women and men, today announced that total net sales for the five-week period ended January 1, 2005 increased 18.3% to $178.5 million, compared to $150.9 million for the five-week period ended January 3, 2004. The company's comparable store sales increased 0.5% for the month, versus a comparable store sales increase of 5.7% in the year ago period.
Year-to-date, total net sales increased 31.8% to $921.6 million, compared to $699.5 million in the year-ago period. Year to date, comparable store sales increased 9.0%, compared to an increase of 6.0% in the year-ago period.
Julian R. Geiger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "During the holiday selling season, we effectively controlled both our promotional cadence and inventory levels despite a slowdown in mall traffic in the beginning of December. As a result, we ended the month with gross margins significantly ahead of last year. We finished the month on a strong sales trend and we believe we are well positioned for the transition into the spring season."
