ADC-Developed Technology Foundational to Emerging 4G Networks

ADC (NASDAQ:ADCT) (www.adc.com) has raised its profile in the 4G wireless space with industry recognition for its development of OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access) multipoint-to-point technology. ADCs OFDMA technology is recognized in the upcoming update of "WiMAX/LTE IPR and Market Impact Report from broadband wireless and WiMAX industry research and analysis firm Maravedis Inc.

In the early 1990s, ADC launched an ambitious R&D effort to break into the broadband data transport market. With an investment of $250 million and 200 engineers, ADC invented and brought to market synchronized OFDMA, an industry-first synchronized multipoint-to-point system leveraging the advantages of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with sub-channelization in an upstream channel to achieve dramatic improvements in transmission efficiency.

After this period of intense development, ADC successfully built and deployed more than 100,000 OFDMA modems. Recognizing ADCs contribution to OFDMA technology, the U.S. Patent Office has issued more than 40 patents based on ADCs work, with dozens of additional applications pending.

"ADC was clearly ahead of its time with this technology, and were proud we were able to bring it outside the lab as a product in a real-world working environment, said Hilton Nicholson, president of the Network Solutions Business Unit for ADC. "Almost fifteen years later, ADCs early, industry-leading innovations with OFDMA are now foundational and being adopted by the wireless industry as it develops next-generation 4G systems such as WiMAX and LTE.

OFDMA technology divides available bandwidth into many orthogonal subcarriers, which can be dynamically allocated to multiple users as needed. This flexibility in bandwidth allocation, along with OFDMs resistance to multipath effects, makes OFDMA the technology of choice for 4G networks trying to push the envelope of bandwidth efficiency.

Today, ADC is working to promote and increase industry awareness of the companys important OFDMA innovations.

Maravedis 4G expert and industry analyst Robert Syputa recently presented an overview of todays market environment at the 4G Summit in Chicago, noting companies with WiMAX and LTE intellectual property. Those companies, in addition to ADC, included Samsung, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia, Huawei, AT&T, Nortel and Ericsson.

"ADC had filed patent applications starting in 1995 that describe methods essential to next generation OFDMA systems. The patents comprise a comprehensive system approach to wireless signaling that is now reflected in both WiMAX and LTE. It is significant that ADC, not normally attributed as being a leader in the wireless standards efforts, had anticipated needed technology to fashion an adaptive, efficient system, said Syputa.
