Abiomed to Ring NASDAQ Closing Bell; Signifying Start of Heart Month and Celebrating a Successful Quarter
Abiomed, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABMD), a leading provider of breakthrough heart support technologies, today announced that Michael R. Minogue, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, will ring the Closing Bell for The NASDAQ Stock Market today at 4 p.m. ET. The ceremony will celebrate a successful third quarter for Abiomed’s fiscal year 2011 while ringing in the beginning of American Heart Month.
During the NASDAQ ceremony, Mr. Minogue will be joined by three female patients who have recovered their hearts with Abiomed technology and will be honoring National Wear Red Day for Women, an iconic day to raise awareness about the number one killer of women – heart disease. Abiomed heart recovery patients, Melissa Moser, Heather Link and Scarlette Harper are available to speak with media about their personal stories and will join Abiomed at the NASDAQ Closing Bell ceremony. Below are additional details on the three female heart recovery patients:
- Melissa Moser, 26 years old
In 2006, Melissa had a near fatal encounter with a pulmonary embolism. At the hospital, Melissa's parents were told her odds for survival was only 10%. Melissa was supported by Abiomed’s heart recovery technology for five days and recovered full function of her heart, allowing her to walk down the aisle at her wedding just two months later.
- Scarlette Harper, 42 years old
In 2008, Scarlette, an active adult who walked every day and had no prior history of heart complications, contracted an acute heart virus. Despite inotropic drugs and intra-aortic balloon (IAB) support, Scarlette was dying and her heart function continued to deteriorate. She received Abiomed’s heart recovery technology to temporarily take over the pumping action of her heart and restore her heart muscle. Three years later, Scarlette has fully recovered her heart, returned to school to complete her master’s degree in Human Relations and currently works as a social worker.
- Heather Link, 25 years old
After returning from a routine dental cleaning in 1998, Heather Link, a vibrant, 13-year-old champion swimmer, came down with a heart virus. The virus caused her heart to fail and as a result, she and received Abiomed’s heart recovery technology to recover her heart. It has been thirteen years since Heather, now a first grade teacher, was supported by the Abiomed technology. She has never returned to the hospital for another heart procedure.
"It is a privilege for me to accompany Melissa, Heather and Scarlette in educating other women about the medical treatment options available for physicians to help patients survive heart attacks and acute heart failure and return to their families with their own hearts,” said Michael R. Minogue, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Abiomed.
