WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 Dominates in May '07 Sweeps;
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- WXYZ-TV is the Detroit television market's dominant number one station, sign-on/sign-off, according to the May 2007 Nielsen Media Research rating survey which ended Wednesday. WXYZ-TV garnered a 5.2 rating/13 share, versus WDIV's 4.2 rating /10 share, WJBK's 3.6 rating/9 share and WWJ's 2.5 rating/ 6 share. In addition to winning sign-on/sign-off in television household ratings, WXYZ was also metro Detroit's number one station in delivery of all key demographics including Women 18-49, Persons 18-49, Women 25-54 and Persons 25-54. Year-to-year, WXYZ- TV is the only Detroit television station that registered sign-on/sign-off household and demographic ratings growth.
Central to WXYZ-TV's May '07 sign-on/sign-off victory, was the extraordinarily strong performance of Channel 7's Action News. Action News was the number one newscast in the important Women 25-54 demographic for morning news, noon news, 5pm news, 6pm news, the entire 5-7:30pm early evening news block and 11pm news. In addition, Action News was also the only Detroit television station that saw growth in nearly every newscast in both household ratings and in key demographics.
Action News This Morning, with Erik Smith and Alicia Smith, was the number one morning news (5-7am) in the Detroit television market among Women 25-54. Action News This Morning garnered a 2.9 rating/19 share, compared to WJBK's 2.4 rating/16 share WDIV's 2.1 rating/13 share. Year-to-year, Action News This Morning registered an overall 11% ratings increase while WDIV and WJBK experienced declines of 10% and 7%, respectively.
Action News at Noon, anchored by Robbie Timmons and Carolyn Clifford was Detroit's leading noon news. Airing 12n-1pm, Action News delivers a 5.4 rating/17.5 share, versus WDIV's 3.7 rating/12.4 share and WJBK's 2.1 rating/7.3 share. In addition to winning top honors in television household ratings, WXYZ's noon news also outdelivered all mid-day news competition in every key demographic category, including Women 18-49 and 25-54. Once again, in a year-to-year comparison, Action News at Noon was Detroit's only noon news to experience household ratings growth; up 6% from May '06 while WDIV was down 10% and WJBK was off by 22%.
WXYZ-TV's 5pm Action News, anchored by Robbie Timmons and co-anchor, Carolyn Clifford, was the dominant number one, posting a commanding victory over WDIV and WJBK. 5pm Action News garnered a 7.7 rating/18 share, versus WDIV's 6.4 rating/15 share and WJBK's 3.0 rating/7 share. This is the twenty- eighth consecutive rating book that 5pm Action News has placed first. 5pm Action News also dominated the competition among Women 25-54. WXYZ outdelivered WDIV by 44% (3.9 vs. 2.7) in Women 25-54 viewers and more than doubled WJBK (3.9 vs. 1.5).
6pm Action News with Diana Lewis and Stephen Clark, was the Detroit television market's number one rated newscast. WXYZ-TV was number one in television household ratings (8 rating vs. WDIV's 7.4 and WJBK's 3.2) and outdelivered WDIV among Women 25-54 by 39% (3.9 vs. 2.8) and more than doubled WJBK's performance (3.9 vs1.6). 6pm Action News was the only newscast in its time period to experience household and Women 25-54 ratings growth, year-to- year. WXYZ was up nearly 10% in television household ratings and 3% in Women 25-54. WDIV is flat in household ratings and down 28% in Women 25-54. Year- to-year, WJBK is down 6% in household ratings and down 20% in Women 25-54.
7pm Action News, anchored by the team of Stephen Clark and Carolyn Clifford was the number one program in the 7-7:30pm time period in delivery of Women 18-49 and Women 25-54, outdelivering WDIV's Wheel of Fortune, WJBK's Bernie Mac and WWJ's Dr. Phil. Year-to-year 7pm Action News is up 11% in household ratings (5.9 versus 5.3) and up 13% in Women 25-54.
One of the greatest areas of growth for WXYZ-TV was 11pm Action News with Diana Lewis and Stephen Clark. 11pm Action News averaged a 10.0 rating/17 share, up 21% in household ratings, year-to-year. WDIV garnered a 11.0 rating/19 share, a decline of 2% in household ratings since May '06. WJBK's 10pm News placed third in late news, garnering a 7.6 rating/11 share, off 6% year-to-year. In the crucially important demographic of Women 25-54, WXYZ's 11pm Action News was number one. Among Women 25-54, 11pm Action News delivered a 7.1 rating compared to WDIV's 6.6 and WJBK's 5.5 rating.
In non-news programming, WXYZ-TV also turned in top rated, powerful performances. WXYZ-TV's morning block programming (9-10am Regis & Kelly, 10- 11am Martha Stewart and 11am-12n The View) was number one, outdelivering WDIV by nearly 58% in household ratings (4.1 vs. 2.6) and nearly doubles WJBK (4.1 vs. 2.1). Among Women 25-54, WXYZ's morning block leads WDIV by 81% and doubles WJBK's performance. In afternoons, ABC Soap Operas were also number one across the board, beating WDIV, WJBK and WWJ in all key demographics.
At 4pm, WXYZ's Oprah delivered a 6.6 rating/17.3 share. WDIV's 4-4:30pm newscast, Local 4 News delivered a 3.0 rating / 8 share, tied with WJBK for 2nd place behind Oprah. In addition to dominating in television household delivery, Oprah outdelivers WDIV, WJBK and WWJ combined in Women 25-54 (Oprah 4.5 rating vs. combined 4.3 rating).
ABC Prime Time programming was number one in May 2007, averaging a 9.8 rating/15 share. WJBK/FOX placed second with a 7.6 rating/12 share. WWJ/CBS and WDIV/NBC tied for 3rd place, each with a 5.9 rating/9 share.
Each local rating point equals approximately 19,380 households; share represents the percentage of TV sets tuned into a program.
