CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army will award seven Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) students with more than $330,000 in ROTC scholarships this week as part of the annual CIAA Basketball Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. Yesterday, the Army presented a scholarship for $88,000 to a student attending Catawba College. Today, the Army will present two scholarships totaling $116,700 to Winthrop University and University of North Carolina - Charlotte and, on Friday, two Winston-Salem State University ROTC scholarships totaling $67,675. Finally, on Saturday two deserving students will each receive a scholarship in the amount of $30,000 to Fayetteville State University.  These scholarship recipients will be recognized in front of thousands of tournament attendees at the Spectrum Center Arena in downtown Charlotte.

These promising young students are among select ROTC Cadets at CIAA institutions receiving funds for tuition and educational fees through the Army ROTC program. Currently, the Army ROTC offers millions of dollars' worth of merit-based scholarships for students throughout the country to attain a college education. Financial benefits include two-, three- and four-year scholarships, an annual book allowance and a tax-free stipend for living expenses.

The Army's 24-year partnership with CIAA was founded to develop and promote leadership, teamwork and academic excellence. This partnership is a prime example of the Army's commitment to helping young Americans create their own path to success. As part of the partnership, the Army maintains a strong presence throughout tournament week, bringing awareness to the Army's support of education and leadership development, as well as the more than 150 career opportunities available in the Army.

In addition to the tournament, the Army will visit Phillip O. Berry High School, Myers Park High School and Vance High School, speak at the CIAA Education Day and participate in the CIAA Career Expo in order to provide information about the many benefits of serving in the Army.
