Mission Accomplished! Sybase Highlights Customer Innovation with ASE Special Agent 15 Awards

DUBLIN, Calif., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sybase, Inc. , a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today presented ASE Special Agent 15 Awards to Eduardo Serikava from Caixa Economica Federal, Grigory Kagan from eSpeed, Inc., and Paul Jackson from Western & Southern Financial Group. The three individuals were honored as part of the "In Search of Special Agent 15: Award Program," which was the culmination of a Sybase(R) "mission" to recognize the drivers of the most original, innovative, and high-impact implementations of the latest version of its enterprise-class relational database management system, Adaptive Server(R) Enterprise (ASE) 15.

"Each of these individuals acted as a 'special agent,' driving technology innovation to improve business processes within the enterprise," said Brian Vink, vice president of product marketing at Sybase. "These customers have taken advantage of new functionality in ASE 15 such as semantic partitioning and the new query processing engine, and as a result, their companies are enjoying significant benefits, including improved database maintenance windows, faster query performance and improved total cost of ownership."

Special Agent ASE 15 Award Winners

SPECIAL AGENT: Eduardo Serikava, Support Supervisor, Caixa Economica Federal

Company: Caixa Economica Federal is based in Brazil and owned by the Brazilian Federal Government. Caixa is one of the largest government-owned financial institutions in Latin America.

Mission -- Partitioning: Caixa wanted to further reduce the time it took for common database administrative tasks. With responsibility for IT infrastructure and monitoring for Caixa, Eduardo Serikava migrated a risk management system from ASE 12.5 to ASE 15. As part of the project, he implemented partitioning in ASE 15 and saw a significant reduction in administrative tasks including an 80 percent improvement in table update statistics, a 95 percent improvement in the time it takes to backup the database and 75 percent faster database recovery time. Caixa also benefited from an increase in system performance including I/O requests that are 10-30 percent faster on ASE 15. As a result, the company has been able to successfully deal with the more than 150 percent growth in data from when the migration began.

SPECIAL AGENT: Grigory Kagan, Database Architect, eSpeed

Company: eSpeed, Inc. is a leader in developing and deploying electronic marketplaces and related trading technology that offers traders access to the most liquid, efficient and neutral financial markets in the world. eSpeed gains a competitive advantage by being able to provide real- time information delivery with the help of ASE 15 and Real-Time Events, a component of the Sybase Data Integration suite.

Mission -- Real-Time Messaging: Grigory Kagan recently led a project to allow changes in data to be proactively pushed to applications and users, giving an enterprise-wide, real-time view of key operational data from multiple data sources. eSpeed implemented ASE 15 with Real-Time Events. The predicted development time was cut in half since Sybase eliminated the need to write custom code to capture events. Message flows are now in thousands per second eliminating delays in trading and back office systems. Additionally, eSpeed was able to bring legacy systems into the mix to provide a more accurate view of business processes.

SPECIAL AGENT: Paul Jackson, System Manager, Western & Southern Financial Group

Company: Western & Southern Financial Group is a Cincinnati-based diversified family of financial services companies with assets owned, managed and under its care in excess of $47 billion. A Fortune 500 company, Western & Southern is leveraging ASE to help fuel its impressive growth.

Mission -- Linux Implementation with Low Total Cost of Ownership: Paul Jackson led a project to migrate his firm's ASE 12.5 database servers on Unix to ASE 15 on Linux while maintaining reliability, increasing performance and reducing costs, and with minimal disruption to development teams. With the migration to ASE 15, Western & Southern saw a significant increase in performance. The company achieved an 80 percent performance improvement in batch cycle times, decreasing the nightly batch cycle by 4 hours; and, was able to reduce the number of servers by 60 percent, providing significant cost savings in hardware and software licensing.
