Engineering Firm MCW Consultants Ltd Ramps Up File Integrity and Productivity With Packeteer(R) iShared(R) Solution
Packeteer®
(NASDAQ:PKTR), the global leader in WAN application delivery, today
announced that the MCW Group of Companies, a leading professional
engineering services firm in Canada, has deployed iShared®
appliances and iShared FlexInstall software at all of its offices
throughout Canada to optimize performance in the company’s
enterprise-wide virtual private network (VPN). The iShared solution has
reduced file access times by a factor of 25, and now ensures integrity
of the company’s large AutoCAD files by
eliminating previous version control problems.
The MCW Group of Companies provides Consulting Engineering Services (MCW
Consultants Ltd.), Energy Management Services (MCW Custom Energy
Solutions Ltd), and Power Engineering Services, (AGE Power Consultants).
Because engineers at different locations routinely worked on the same
project, the company operated a VPN connecting all of its offices. To
deliver acceptable levels of performance, many of the larger AutoCAD
files were replicated via the VPN to local servers. But the inability to
coordinate updates to multiple versions of the same file caused version
control and data corruption problems.
"What we needed was a distributed file system
that would seamlessly extend the datacenter out to all offices,”
explained Shawn Marten, IT manager at MCW. "As
a complete ‘remote office in a box,’
the iShared solution is perfect for this purpose. With iShared’s
approach that is based on single-instance storage with
application-intelligent caching, we no longer need to make any tradeoffs
between file integrity and user productivity.”
iShared’s Wide Area File Services (WAFS)
technology provides real-time, read-write access for both the Common
Internet File System (CIFS) and the Network File System (NFS) via the
WAN. iShared’s WAFS is a true distributed
file system that combines file integrity features, such as read-ahead
and file differencing, with intelligent WAN bandwidth optimization
features, including branch office caching, TCP acceleration and data
reduction through wide-dictionary compression. To fully optimize WAN
bandwidth utilization, only the changes in a file —
and not entire files — are transmitted.
iShared’s file differencing technique also
incorporates sophisticated journaling and recovery provisions to
maintain full availability and transparency for file read/write
operations during WAN disruptions and outages.
iShared’s file performance optimization and
acceleration technology is also a key component in Packeteer’s
iShaper product which adds to these features with best-in-class
application classification, visibility and QoS to create the industry’s
first unified branch office appliance.
"As soon as we installed the iShared
solution, there was an immediate and significant improvement in
performance,” Marten said. "An
AutoCAD file that used to take a minute to download across the VPN, now
loads in about two seconds. This has not only improved the productivity
of our engineers, but it has also eliminated the complaints the IT
department used to get concerning poor performance.”
The MCW Group of Companies is using a mix of iShared appliances and
iShared FlexInstall software. The datacenter and the three largest
offices are each equipped with a model IS 300 appliance; one other
office has a model IS 100 appliance. The remaining offices utilize
iShared FlexInstall software, which is installed on existing Microsoft
Windows 2003 servers. "Both the appliances
and the software were very easy to install and configure; just fill in
the blanks and it runs great,” Marten added.
"As MCW Group of Companies continues to grow
and provide engineering services across Canada, the IT department will
deliver IT solutions that will address WAN performance concerns and
enable synergy among all offices,” said Alex
Rodas, senior IT manager at MCW. "The
Packeteer iShared solution has become part of the overall network
improvements that will enable us to meet our strategic plans and produce
a solid network.” About MCW Group of Companies of Companies
